Introducing The Art Of Ellie

With our upcoming DIY Screen Printing Workshop coming up in a couple of weeks we thought we’d introduce you to local artist, screen printer and Print Bar legend, Ellie Anderson (aka. The Art Of Ellie). We’re asked her a few questions so you can get to know her a little better, and know what to expect for Saturdays workshop.

HELLO ELLIE!

Tell us about your practice in three sentences

Hey there! My name is Ellie Anderson (also known as the Art of Ellie). I’m a Brisbane based, freelance illustrator, printer and fine artist and my practice uses drawing and printmaking to explore patterning and the natural environment. I resource my ideas and imagery from a cross-section of cultural influences, particularly from past travel experiences.  My work is best known for its fusing of intricate patterns with flora and fauna, making ornamental designs.

Why do you love the screen print method, and why do you use it in your works

I first learned how to screen print because I really wanted to put my hand drawn designs on custom printed t-shirts!  In the process I realise

d just how accessible it made my art. Having a style of drawing which is quite time consuming and intensive – it was awesome discovering that I could replicate my intricate hand drawn works by using a handmade process of printing. After mastering my printing techniques further,  I started experimentin

g with layering and colour, ultimately manipulating my original designs, turning them into something totally different!  I loved this new found freedom with my work, and how far I could push an image. and how far I could push an image.

Who are your top 5 screen printer or artists you draw inspiration from

Ok not all of these folks are screen printers – but they are my top 5…

1. Laura Slaters – I love her layered, textural textile designs
2. Miso – the way she works so intricately and delicately is breath taking.
3. We Buy Your Kids – because of the amount of fun they have with their screen printing!
4. Kelsey Brookes – because his work is insane!
5. Everingham & Watson – I love how they made Australiana design and souvenirs not tacky!

Can you give us some top tips for beginner printers and artists

Be prolific with your art making, don’t be afraid to show your work, and get involved in every creative opportunity that comes your way!
