I think we can all agree that 2014 was a year brimming with important news and world events, both good and bad. As most people do at the beginning of a new year, we thought we’d write a short retrospective of the year that was through a showcase of 2014’s most iconic t-shirts. Let’s see if you can remember these unique wearable wonders:
Tee-ception
Making the rounds of the internet was the Macalay Culkin/Ryan Gosling t-shirt inception which saw Culkin wearing a tee with Gosling wearing a tee of Culkin. And as if that wasn’t enough, Gosling took it another level by wearing a tee of the original inception! It’s so deep it’s almost hypnotising…
The “W-Neck”
The Bondi Hipsters truly exploded in 2014, taking the hipster trend to the extreme and even creating a new t-shirt for hipster-kind – the W-neck. A step above the classic v-neck, the tee exposes a man’s chest to the elements, hoping to “make the man breast sexy”. Although it was originally created a few years back, 2014 saw it refined further in the duo’s latest endeavour, Soul Mates.
The Muscle Singlet
Most famously worn by Jared Leto as he strolled around New York, the new muscle tank – low cut front and sides – is another iconic tee that has become a firm favourite among festival goers. Popular among musicians and their fans, these tanks will show off all those muscles you’ve worked on in time for festival season for guys and girls (just ask Queen Bey, Miley or Liam Hemsworth!)
#StartTheRiot
This year’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia saw attendees sporting fashion with a politically charged message. The tees, emblazoned with #StartTheRiot on the back and various messages on the front, were worn by a number of models between shows. Slogans included Reject Racism, Save the Reef and Abbot Is So Last Season. These handmade pieces by model Ollie Henderson made headlines and were praised for their brazen but honest messages. Proof that the humble tee can be a powerful canvas for social change!
Sports Jerseys
It doesn’t matter if you’re an NBA fan, hit the courts after work or just like the comfy feel – sports jerseys were (and are) a huge 2014 fashion fave for celebrities and the public alike. With celebs like Rihanna, Miley and Iggy Azalea all sporting the trend (pun intended!), it’s easy to see why sports jerseys are so well-loved. Comfy, colourful and cool, this is one to watch.
Risky Slogan Tees from Urban Outfitters
Iconic – but not for the right reasons. In case you missed this, before it was promptly pulled from the shelves, Urban Outfitters released an avalanche of terrible tees in 2014, all of which made headlines due to their offensive nature. One of the most well-known designs had the words eat less emblazoned across the top. Why? We’re at a loss too.
Notable mentions go to Bondi Hipsters x Miranda Kerr (intro image), Kanye West (who wore himself), Discount Universe (pictured), Kenzo, HBA and Been Trill, without which our news feeds, dreams and wardrobes would be very dull!
Did we miss something?
